An elemental particle which is identical to the nucleus of the lightest hydrogen [[atom]]. Both proton(s) and [[neutron]](s) are constituents of nuclei of elements heavier than hydrogen. A proton carries a positive charge numerically equal to the charge of an electron and has a mass of 1.6724 × 10<sup>–24</sup> gram or 1.0075 atomic mass unit.
