The radiation intensity existing in the environment which is in addition to the specfic radiation under consideration. On the surface, this is the ionizing radiation produced by cosmic irradiation and naturally occurring trace amounts of radioactive elements. In the subsurface, this is the naturally occurring radiation prior to the introduction of radioactive tracer materials or activation.
