Shale which becomes dislodged by bit, drill pipe, or jet action. Also shale which becomes hydrated during the drilling process and falls into the well bore. Heaving shale quite often leaves cavities and ledges. Heaving shale is not necessarily related to overpressure. Compare plastic shale.
