terms:hot_wire_analyzer
A device used to detect hydrocarbon gases returned to the surface by the drilling mud. Basically a Wheatstone bridge, two arms of which are kept at a high temperature. Hydrocarbon gases become oxidized as they pass over one arm, which increases its temperature, changes its resistance, and unbalances the bridge. The hot wire analyzer response is sometimes plotted as a strip log.
