terms:igneous_rock

Rock formed from a melt or magma by cooling and solidification. The solidification may occur beneath the surface of the earth from magma (intrusive) or at the surface from lava (extrusive or volcanic). If the solidification occurred at depth, the rock is called “plutonic”; if formed from magma erupted onto the surface, it is called “volcanic.”
