terms:inelastic_collision
A collision in which the total kinetic energy of the colliding particles is not the same after the collision as before the collision. For example, in the case of a fast moving neutron colliding with a nucleus of an element, the nucleus becomes excited and excess energy is reduced by emitting a gamma ray that is characteristic of the element. Compare elastic collision.
