ppm. Refers to concentration by weight for both solute and solution. Parts per million (wt./wt.) differs from mg/liter (wt./vol.) when the specific gravity of the solution differs from that of pure water at standard conditions.
Many salinities that have been measured in units of mg/liters are reported routinely in ppm without proper conversion to ppm.
