terms:shear_wave

S-wave. In acoustics, a transverse wave. Direction of propagation is perpendicular to direction of particle displacement. For transmission of a shear wave, particles in lateral motion must drag neighboring particles in similar lateral motion. Substances which tend to oppose shear can support propagation of a shear wave (i.e., rigid substances, solids). Compare compression wave. See also acoustic wave.
