terms:statistical_variations
Nuclear emissions are random in nature. Variations in the number of specific nuclear emissions observed over a period of time are referred to as statistical variations. Because of the statistical nature of these emissions, radioactivity measurements must be averaged over a length of time in order to determine the representative level of radioactivity for the formation.
